Introduction: In today's digital world, identity theft and unauthorized credit checks have become commonplace. Freezing your credit is a powerful step you can take to protect yourself from fraudulent activity. When your credit is frozen, potential lenders cannot access your report, preventing criminals from opening new accounts in your name. Below you’ll find instructions on how to place (and lift) a security freeze at each of the three major U.S. credit bureaus.
Why Freeze Your Credit?
- Prevent Unwanted Credit Inquiries: A freeze blocks new creditors from accessing your report.
- Protect Against Identity Theft: Even if someone has your personal information, they typically can’t open new credit lines.
- Peace of Mind: Enjoy the reassurance of added protection without monthly fees.
How to Freeze Your Credit with the Major Bureaus

How to Lift or Unfreeze Your Credit
If you need to apply for a loan or a credit card, you can temporarily lift (or “thaw”) your freeze by logging back into each bureau’s website or calling their automated phone system. You’ll specify how long you want the freeze lifted, and it will automatically resume after that time period.
